Join our nationwide community committed to creating an America where every child has the opportunity to learn to read.
It’s a shocking reality: 36 million Americans can’t read at the most basic level. The impact on their lives, and our nation, is far reaching. Low literacy is directly related to higher unemployment, lower earned income, and poor health.
But this is a problem we can solve if we work together, and it begins with America’s most precious resource: our children.
For 25 years the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy has been helping kids learn to read because early literacy is the key to future success. By age five, a child needs to know 4,000 to 5,000 words to become a proficient reader, and children who can’t read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school than those who are proficient readers.
As someone who believes that every child in America has the right to learn to read, you’ll be glad to hear that during our recent campaign, thousands of people like you came together to put more books in the hands of children who deserve them.
Now you have the opportunity to take the next step: to help children learn to read those books. As a public charity, we depend on individual donations and lasting gifts from people like you to keep the literacy movement strong. Your support today will continue the quest to give all children what they deserve — an equal chance to acquire a good education and build their American Dream. So please give generously!
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, founded by former First Lady Barbara Bush, is the nation’s leading advocate for family literacy. We believe family literacy is key to solving today’s most critical challenges: social and economic mobility, quality of life, and global competitiveness. Research shows that reading proficiently by third grade is directly linked to successes later in life, yet millions of American children are struggling to read today. Thanks to the generous support of individual donors and our corporate sponsors, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy provides educational opportunities for young children and their parents, helping them achieve the literacy skills they need to pursue a brighter future.
